SEVENTH ANNUAL CARUS LECTURE AT CONCORDIA         

 

Concordia College will present the seventh annual Carus Lecture in Philosophy, "Can Philosophy Save Your Life?” featuring Dr. John Kaag at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in the Centrum, Knutson Campus Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Kaag is chair/professor of philosophy at UMass Lowell. He earned an M.A. in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University, Middletown and his doctorate from the University of Oregon, Eugene. His research interests include American philosophy, aesthetics, ethics, history of philosophy, Asian philosophy, logic/epistemology, moral psychology and philosophy of mind.

Kaag is widely published, with articles in such academic journals as Ethics, The Pluralist, and Transactions of the Charles S. Pierce Society, as well as in publications such as The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Recently, Kaag has published two philosophical memoirs – “Hiking With Nietzsche: On Becoming Who You Are” and “American Philosophy: A Love Story,” which was recognized as an NPR Best Book of 2016 and as a New York Times Editor's Choice.

Concordia College created the Carus Professorship in Philosophy and the Carus Lectureship in recognition of gifts from the charitable trusts established by M. Elisabeth Carus and her brother Alwin C. Carus. The Carus’ grew up at LaSalle, Ill., and attended the University of Chicago, where Alwin established strong, lifelong connections that represented his deep interests in philosophy, science and religion.
