SIXTH ANNUAL CARUS LECTURE AT CONCORDIA
Concordia College will present the sixth annual Carus Lecture in Philosophy, "Investigating Opioids Inside and Out to Better Understand Our Current Epidemic,” featuring Dr. Mark Sullivan at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Centrum, Knutson Campus Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Sullivan is professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington and psychiatrist at the UWMC Center for Pain Relief, where he’s served 30 years, and the Regional Heart Center, where he’s served 10 years. He is dedicated to providing patient-centered, whole-person care for patients with chronic illness that encompasses both body and mind.
He received his M.D. and his Ph.D. in philosophy from Vanderbilt University. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and his latest book is “The Patient as Agent of Health and Health Care.”
Concordia College created the Carus Professorship in Philosophy and the Carus Lectureship in recognition of gifts from the charitable trusts established by M. Elisabeth Carus and her brother Alwin C. Carus. The Carus’ grew up at LaSalle, Ill., and attended the University of Chicago, where Alwin established strong, lifelong connections that represented his deep interests in philosophy, science and religion.
