CONCORDIA SPEECH PLACES FIRST IN TOURNAMENT

The Concordia College Speech Team won first place at the Minnesota Collegiate Forensics Tournament. The team earned a combined 328 points to win the tournament over the University of Minnesota Speech Team which earned 283.5 points and Minnesota State Mankato with 276 points.

Leah Roberts ’21, an English education major from New York Mills, Minn., was named state champion in Oratory (persuasive), Prose and Informative Speaking. Dominic Meyers ’21, a communication major from Aberdeen, S.D., was named state champion in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Concordia students earned four of the top 10 individual speaker awards at the tournament. Roberts was first place speaker at the State Tournament, Meyers took third place, Rebecca Makula Duncan ’22, West Fargo, N.D., took seventh and Grace Weber ’20, Woodbury, Minn., took eighth.

For what is believed to be the first time ever, Concordia will be taking two speakers to represent Minnesota at the oldest collegiate national speech tournament in the country which began in 1874. The top two oratory finalists at each state tournament go on to represent their state at Interstate Oratory. Josephine Nunez ’21, a theatre/communication major from Jackson, Minn., who placed second in Oratory will join Roberts in representing Minnesota.

The team is preparing for the National Individual Events Tournament hosted by the American Forensic Association in Santa Ana, Calif., April 3-5. Last year the team placed 12th overall.
