CONCORDIA STUDENTS CHOSEN AS PEACE SCHOLARS

Two Concordia College students, Alyssa Armstrong ’18, the daughter of John and Christina Armstrong, Rochester, Minn., and Sabina Beck ’19, the daughter of Tyler and Helen Beck, St. Paul, Minn., have been named Concordia’s 2018 Peace Scholars. Concordia’s Scholars are underwritten by the Philip C. Smaby Family Foundation.

The Peace Scholars program, sponsored by Augsburg, Augustana (S.D.), Luther, Pacific Lutheran, St. Olaf and Concordia, is designed to deepen students' understanding of the central issues and theories regarding conflict, war, and peace. A cohort of two students from each college will study for seven weeks this summer in Norway at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer and at the University of Oslo International Summer School.

Armstrong, a major in environmental studies and English writing, seeks to extend her many involvements in sustainability and to increase her expertise in writing for social change. She believes in the power of text to engender peace in our world.

Beck, a major in global studies, hopes to advance her interests and skills in the development of narrative imagination through story exchange to create a more empathetic world.  She believes in the power of dialogue to build peace in our time.

Armstrong and Beck will be introduced at the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum, Sept. 14-15, held on the campuses of Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota West Bank.

Concordia College is a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offering more than 50 majors, including 15 honors majors and 12 preprofessional programs.
