SYMPOSIUM TO EXPLORE AMERICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST

Join the Concordia community as we discuss “America and the Middle East: Local and Global Dimensions” at this year’s Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium Tuesday, Sept. 20-Wednesday, Sept. 21. Most events are held in Memorial Auditorium on the Moorhead, Minn., campus. All events are free.

The current generation of students has come of age in a post-September 11 world that has been largely defined by America’s War on Terror, the center of which has been the Middle East. In light of this, and as global citizens, it’s especially important to deepen our understanding of the rich and diverse history and cultures of the Middle East and its people. The symposium will move beyond the headlines and connect the Concordia community with the local and global dimensions of America’s relations with the Middle East.

Speakers include Farah Pandith, foreign policy strategist and first-ever appointed State Department Representative to Muslim communities; Dr. Asaad Al-Saleh, assistant professor of Arabic literature, Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Indiana University; Lee Keylock, director of programs for Narrative4; Diverse Voices from the local Fargo-Moorhead community; and Minnesota transplant from Saudi Arabia Hend Al-Mansour, installation artist and co-founder of the group Arab Artists in the Twin Cities.

A staged reading of “In Conflict,” by Douglas Wager, will be held in conjunction with the symposium at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in Frances Frazier Comstock Theatre.

All sessions for the symposium, now in its 30th year, are free and open to the public. For a complete schedule visit ConcordiaCollege.edu/symposium.

Concordia College is a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offering more than 50 majors, including 15 honors majors and 12 preprofessional programs.
