TRI-COLLEGE HISTORY LECTURE ON MARTIN LUTHER
Dr. Roy Hammerling, professor of religion, will present the annual Tri-College History Lecture, “We are all Beggars: The Reform of Martin Luther,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in Jones A/B, Knutson Campus Center.
Interpreters of Martin Luther’s legacy have often had difficulty reconciling
an apparent sharp divide between the early, gaunt, stern Augustinian friar and the older, well-fed, fiery Protestant Reformer. The puzzle of Luther’s final written words, “We are all beggars,” which have confounded scholars for ages, only makes sense if considered alongside his ideas about all people being beggars in need of God’s grace. Hammerling will take an in-depth look at one continuity between the young and old Luther, that his view of being a beggar before God, can provide insight into one of history’s most controversial figures.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
