Dr. Madison Clark

Assistant Professor of History History

Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Dr. Clark earned her B.A. in history from Auburn University Montgomery before earning a dual master's degree in history and applied women's studies from Claremont Graduate University in Southern California. She then earned her doctorate in African American and African diaspora studies from Indiana University.

Dr. Clark's research focuses on race relations in Brazil, particularly how Afro-Brazilians responded to Black erasure in the late 19th century. Her current book project highlights case studies of the interactions and responses African Americans had when traveling to Brazil and the privileges associated with white proximity. In addition to studying forms of resistance, she also is passionate about Black sexuality, particularly how polyamory acts as a form of liberation. She loves Michael Jackson, Star Wars, and all things Disney.

Dr. Clark shares, "When I started teaching college students in 2018, I had no idea I would fall so much in love with it. I am always excited to engage with students in critical conversations that help expand our ways of thinking and analyzing. History is such an important field that is more than just memorizing important dates and events; I am happiest when helping students connect the dots and patterns in human behavior and how we can all work toward liberation."
