Professor Writing and Researching for Popular Podcast

Her words will reach millions.

Writing and researching is already part of Dr. Amy Watkin’s duties as a professor of English, but she was looking for a new challenge and found it with the podcast “Here’s Where It Gets Interesting.”

The podcast was looking for a writer, so Watkin applied and is writing and researching four of the 12-episode series “How Women Won World War II.” Watkin receives the topics for each episode along with notes completed by an initial researcher. She then adds her notes and research and shapes it into a script to be read by Sharon McMahon, the podcast host.

The podcast releases about three episodes a week, and this particular series will have its first episode released Jan. 23.

Watkin said “Here’s Where It Gets Interesting” centers around American history and politics, often — but not always — focusing on women.

“They do a series on First Ladies and another one on each of the 50 states,” Watkin said. “McMahon lives in Duluth, Minn., and used to be a high school government teacher, so her focus is on fighting misinformation around government, history, and politics by providing information. Most of her episodes are based in fact rather than opinion.”

The podcast description says it “finds the stories of America you probably haven’t heard and … will ignite your curiosity about the fascinating stuff that wasn’t in history textbooks. McMahon is joined by notable thought leaders who … inspire us to grow into more thoughtful, well-informed citizens.”

Watkin is excited to be delving into history for this well-known podcast, which gets approximately 1.2 million downloads per month, and hopes Cobbers will tune in wherever you get your podcasts.
