How did you hear about Concordia and why did you choose to attend college here?
I initially heard about Concordia from my high school track and field coach. I chose to attend college here because I could get a great education, continue my love for running at a collegiate level, and be involved in music.
Was there a defining moment in your college search?
Originally, I was enrolled at UND for their aviation program and was taking flying lessons to earn my private pilot’s license in high school. During my senior year, I realized I wanted to pursue flying as a hobby and began exploring other options. I applied to Concordia and, the next day, cross country coach Maddie Van Beek reached out asking if I wanted to run. With a visit to campus and lunch with Coach Maddie and Coach Marv, I knew I wanted to call this place home.
How did you decide on your area of study?
I met with Dr. Shelly Gompf during my visit, and she sold me on the healthcare leadership program.
Do you have a favorite healthcare leadership course? Why is it your favorite?
My favorite course was Long-Term Care Regulatory Management with Dr. Jake Goering because we got to tour and meet with nursing home administrators around the Fargo-Moorhead area.

What are the benefits of taking classes in the Heimark Center?
One of the biggest benefits of taking classes in the Heimark Center is being in the boardroom. It gives us a look into what our future career will look like and encourages meaningful discussions during class.
How has Concordia prepared you for your career goal of becoming a nursing home administrator?
Concordia has prepared me well for my goal of becoming a nursing home administrator by learning about communication, leadership, and how the long-term care field works. My classes have helped me gain an understanding of the rules and responsibilities that come with running a facility, while at the same time creating a caring, positive environment for residents and staff. I’ve also gained confidence through discussions and volunteer opportunities working with the older population in the community. Concordia has given me a great insight into the reality of a nursing home administrator.
Please tell me about your internship at Glenwood Retirement Village.
My time spent at Glenwood Retirement Village has been such a great experience. I’ve gained a deep understanding of how a long-term care community operates daily and how each department works together to provide high-quality care for residents. My preceptor, Emily Benham, along with other department leaders, shared not only valuable knowledge about the field of long-term care but also meaningful lessons about leadership and personal growth.
During my internship, I had the opportunity to assist with various projects, participate in resident activities, and complete department rotations that gave me an in-depth look at each area of the organization. My favorite part was spending time with the residents and seeing firsthand how leadership decisions directly impact their care, well-being, and overall happiness. This experience has truly prepared me for my future as a nursing home administrator.
What campus activities are you involved in?
I am involved in cross country, track and field, and horn choir.
Why did you choose to run cross country and track and field at Concordia?
I chose to run cross country and track at Concordia because I wanted to continue my love for running with people who also share that passion.
