Dr. Gregory Carlson is a professor in the Communication Studies and Theatre Art department, where he currently serves as the director of the film studies program. He advises the department’s two media activities: the weekly television show Concordia On-Air and KORD, Concordia’s radio station. Carlson is the longtime film editor of the High Plains Reader, an independent print and digital outlet where his work as a journalist includes features, interviews, and film criticism.
A four-time finalist in the Fusion/International Documentary Challenge, Carlson has produced and directed films that have screened at Slamdance, Hot Docs, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival, South Dakota Film Festival, Free Range Film Festival, Orlando Film Festival, Honolulu International Film Festival, and many others.
He frequently collaborates with students and alumni and has received both the Margie Bailly Volunteer Spirit Award and the Ted M. Larson Award from the Fargo Film Festival, where he continues to oversee the annual 2-Minute Movie Contest while acting as the festival’s Projects Producer. In 2019, Carlson co-founded the North Dakota Film Society.
