Concordia Students Raise $4,500 for Haiti
Concordia students have raised $4,500 for the people of Haiti. The money collected by the Concordia Haitian Relief Fund will be donated to Lutheran World Relief to help those affected by the recent earthquake.
Students in Dr. Peter Hovde's Global Issues course led the project, setting up a booth in Anderson Commons Jan. 18-22 and teaming up with Dining Services, which hosted a fundraising meal. Students are now in the process of organizing a second phase of fundraising through Lutheran World Relief.
Students Theodor Rinell, Laura Ingalls and Dawit Alemayehu created the Facebook group Concordia Haitian Relief Fund shortly after the earthquake to spread awareness. The group now has more than 800 members, along with postings from students and staff interested in donating money, goods and their time.
"I thought it was important for students to get involved because global issues do make an impact on us ... even if we are thousands of miles away," says Rinell. "Students should really live up to BREW (curriculum theme of becoming responsibly engaged in the world). It is really quite an amazing thing that separates us from other schools."
