Students grow through exploration, experience, and connection, and your support makes a difference.

In college, your student will grow by exploring new interests, gaining experience, and building connections. While they will take the lead, your support still genuinely matters. Asking thoughtful questions and encouraging their next steps can make a lasting impact.

Ways to Support Your Students

  • Support your student’s educational journey by encouraging exploration of new interests while affirming what they already do well.

  • Engage in your student's college experience by discussing their classes and activities, encouraging open communication.

  • Embrace your student's choice of major, recognizing the value in pursuing passions aligned with their interests and talents.

  • Facilitate your student’s professional growth by sharing your own career journey and helping them to grow their own network through your contacts.

  • Encourage your student’s motivation in their job and internship search and remind them to utilize campus resources for help and growth.

Career Support and Resources

Students can engage with the Career Center in a variety of ways throughout their college journey. Some students schedule appointments or attend workshops, while others start by exploring online resources, videos, job and internship postings, or career guides at their own pace.

Encourage your student to explore Career Center resources if they:

  • Are unsure about their major or career direction

  • Are applying for internships, jobs, or graduate school

  • Need support with resumes, interviewing, or networking

  • Want to gain experience or build professional connections

  • Simply do not know where to start

Students do not need to have a complete plan before connecting with career resources. Sometimes the first step is simply exploring possibilities and learning what support is available.

Conversation Starters

Thoughtful, open-ended questions can create supportive conversations without adding pressure.

  • What have you enjoyed most this semester?

  • What’s been more challenging than you expected?

  • Have you met anyone who has made an impact on your experience?

  • What are you curious about exploring next?

  • Have you looked into internships, research, or campus opportunities yet?

  • How can I best support you right now?
